The Clinical Supervision Series I: Foundations & Models Microcredential series covers the foundational competencies in clinical supervision for mental health professionals, including supervisor roles, functions, core competencies, and major supervision models including developmental, psychotherapy-based, integrative, reflective, constructivist, and blended approaches to supervision to support effective, ethical, and developmentally responsive site supervision.

Traditional supervision models have often reflected Eurocentric, patriarchal, and deficit-based frameworks that prioritize hierarchical, “expert-driven” approaches (Bird, 2006; Carlson & Erikson, 2001). In these models, knowledge flows from the seasoned supervisor to the trainee, reinforcing a top-down dynamic rooted in medical-model thinking (Whiting, 2007). In contrast, postmodern approaches to supervision emphasize strengths over deficits, possibilities over limitations, and multiple perspectives rather than a single “truth” (Edwards & Chen, 1999). Grounded in social constructivism, contemporary supervision reimagines knowledge as co􀀁created, contextually shaped, and relational. From this perspective, meaning emerges through dialogue, and both supervisor and supervisee actively contribute to the supervisory process (Combs & Freedman, 2012; Gergen, 1999). This webinar introduces participants to supervision through a social constructivist lens which will provide participants with an introduction to the key models including Narrative/Collaborative, Solution-Focused, and Systemic and learn how to apply these approaches in practice working with diverse populations. Through case examples and practical strategies, participants will gain tools to foster collaborative, strengths-based, and culturally responsive supervision. By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to identify the key aspects of each model, understand when best to apply each model and potential limitations of each approach, and incorporate these methodologies into a cohesive, adaptable supervision practice.
