This course is designed to increase awareness among clinical supervisors and training-site professionals who work with master’s- and doctoral-level psychology students throughout the practicum and internship process. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of the unique challenges experienced by practicum applicants and supervisees who are blind or visually impaired, a population that ranges from low vision to total blindness and remains substantially underrepresented in psychology doctoral training. Emphasis is placed on building cultural competence with this population, dispelling common misconceptions, and identifying the ways that bias and discrimination can enter the supervisory relationship, often unintentionally. Through this lens, participants will examine how attitudinal and structural barriers shape a supervisee’s training experience and how supervisors can actively reduce those barriers. The course also provides a detailed analysis of the reasonable accommodation requirements established by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and interpreted in enforcement guidance from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, alongside American Psychological Association (APA) guidance for training-site directors and the published training guidelines of Pearlstein et al. (2022), and translates these requirements into concrete supervisory practice.
Participants will receive practical guidance on developing appropriate, individualized accommodation plans and on collaborating effectively with a student’s academic program to implement those plans in a legal and ethical manner. The course concludes by considering broader strategies for increasing the inclusion of blind and visually impaired individuals in the field of psychology, and why that inclusion matters for the profession and for the clients it serves.
Zoom link will be available on course page in “My Courses” upon event registration.
